Grant Mark Peterson

July 21, 1941 — April 22, 2018

Grant Mark Peterson passed away peacefully on April 22, 2018, surrounded by loved ones, after a difficult battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 76.

Grant was born in Rexburg, ID, on July 21, 1941, and grew up on a farm in Plano. After serving in the LDS South German Mission, he married Mary Elizabeth Bacon on July 3, 1964, in Manti, UT. They have five children.

Grant graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1969. After further training, he specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. His first post as a specialist was in the military: he was commissioned as a captain in 1969 and served in Frankfurt, Germany, from 1973–76. Grant was discharged as a major.

Next, Grant and Mary moved back to Blackfoot, ID, where Grant served the community as a dedicated OB-GYN. During his 30 years of work, he delivered one of his own grandchildren, as well as some of the grandchildren of his original patients.

Not only did Grant serve Blackfoot as a physician, but he was a charter member of the Idaho Medical Association. He also spent 8 years on District 8’s governing board for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving women’s health care. Additionally, Grant served on the selection committee for the University of Utah School of Medicine.

Grant’s dedication to medicine was surpassed by his love for his faith. Throughout his life, he served in many capacities in the LDS church, including as bishop, stake missionary, and stake mission president. After retirement, he and Mary served two missions as medical advisors for the mission field. He also deeply loved his time as a temple worker in the Swiss, Rexburg, and Idaho Falls temples.

Grant and Mary enjoyed exploring the world in their free time. They traveled extensively together both inside the US and across the globe, including Europe, Canada, China, Central America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Grant is preceded in death by his parents, Mark Ephraim Peterson and Norma Pearl Nalder. He is survived by his wife and his siblings: Sheryl Bell (Garon), Dean Peterson (Karen), Glade Peterson (Beverly), Margo McFadden (Brent), Weldon Peterson (Christine), Lynn Peterson (LaRae), and Kerry Peterson (Ely).

He is also survived by his children: Erika Leavitt (Mike), Heidi Weaver (Glen), Mandee Peterson, LeNell Jensen (John), and Royce Peterson (Mandy). Lastly, Grant is survived by his 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
