Velda Lavern Nelson

Velda LaVern Nelson, passed away peacefully, June 1, 2017 at her home surrounded by family. She was under the care of Encompass Hospice.

Velda was born December 10, 1925 in Shelley, Idaho to Raymond Moroni and Gladys LaVetta Jensen Peck. She grew up in Shelley, Idaho where she attended school and graduated from Shelley High School. On March 22, 1944, she married her sweetheart, Vern Farrell Nelson, who passed away on October 3, 2000. Their marriage was solemnized in the Boise Temple on June 18, 1987. Together they raised 6 children, Vicki, Rex, Janet, Roxie, Dale and Lin.

Throughout her life, Velda worked in the nursery at the Sacred Heart Hospital, as a caretaker at a rest home, as a motel housekeeper, and as a child care provider to many children. She worked many years alongside her husband in many various positions in potato harvesting, and best of all she was a homemaker. She lived her young life in Shelley, Idaho for 43 years, then moved her family to Mountain Home where she lived for 33 years. After the death of her husband she returned to Idaho Falls to be closer to family, where she spent the last 16 years.

Velda loved to dance. She enjoyed painting ceramics and doing embroidery needlework. She enjoyed her time at the Senior Citizen Center in Mountain Home alongside her husband and friends. She loved to visit with her family. She was a loving wife and mother and continued to spread her love to her 15 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Vicki (Farr) Bowman, Rex (Glenda) Nelson of Shelley, Idaho, Janet (Doug) Mays, Roxie (Jerry) Landon, Idaho Falls, Idaho and Dale Nelson of Mountain Home, Idaho, 15 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Gladys Peck; her husband, Vern Nelson, a son, Lin Nelson, sisters, Coy Hitz, Bodene Carson and Fonda Harris, and one great grandson, Kadeon Landon.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will meet with friends Tuesday morning from 9:30 till 10:40 a.m. at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W Oak Street in Shelley.
