In Loving Memory
Cherise Elison Alvey
6/8/1959 - 12/24/2013

Cherise Elison Alvey, 54, of Firth, Idaho passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She had been in the care of Avalon  Hospice, and her mother after battling cancer for the third time in 13 years.

She was born in Pocatello, Idaho on June 8, 1959 to Gary Croft Elison and Sharon Bullock. She would become the oldest of ten children.

She was raised and attended school in Moreland, Idaho. She graduated from Snake River High School in 1977, attended Brigham Young University for three years and then in July 1980 she left school to serve an 18-month mission for her church in the Argentina Buenos Aires South Mission. She returned home in December 1981 and continued her schooling at BYU to finish her bachelors in Elementary Education, graduating in 1982. She taught school in the Firth School District for 30 years. She loved her students and fellow teachers dearly!

Cherise had three step-children whom she helped to raise and loved as her own, and had four children of her own. She had five grandchildren from her step-children, who she adored.  They gave her the nick-name “Grandma Rocks!”. Her children were the light of her life. She enjoyed spending time with them; going on camping trips and travelling for family vacations.

Cherise was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various positions over the years, ranging from teaching primary to being the ward organist. She had a love for the temple and attended regularly.

She was active in so many things, loved life and lived it fully. She was very athletic and was a great competitor as a young athlete. She later enjoyed coaching and attending her children’s sporting events. She was a self-proclaimed work-a-holic and it was a rare occasion if she wasn’t working other jobs in addition to teaching.  In January 2012, she decided to go back to school for her Masters degree in counseling, and on December 10, 2013 she received her Honorary Masters Degree from Northwest Nazarene University.

She is survived by her parents, Gary and Sharon Elison of Meridian, Idaho; her siblings, Tawnja (Dave) Powers of Dillingham, AK, LeiLani (Paul) Treasure of Middleton, ID, Lance (Wendy) Elison of McCammon, ID, Selena (Troy) Wheatley of Pocatello, ID, Kirsten (Richard) Leavitt of Blackfoot, ID, Devin (Shelby) Elison of Jerome, ID, Dustin Elison of Star, ID, and Casey Elison, of Meridian, ID; and six children, Stephanie (Jeremy) Bird of Idaho Falls, Paul (BreAnn) Alvey of Rock Springs, WY, Daynon Alvey of Firth, Nateale (Kordell) Koepnick of Heyburn, Kreisha Alvey and Quinn Alvey of Firth, ID; and five grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents Bernell and Dorothy Elison, and Milton and Ruphenia Bullock; her brother, Shawn Elison; and her step-son, Michael Alvey.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the Firth Stake Center, (823 N. 675 E.) in Basalt. The family will meet with friends and family on Friday evening from 6-8 pm, and Saturday morning from 11:30-12:40 both at the Stake Center. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley. Internment will be in the Goshen Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Cherise can be sent to the American Cancer Society, https://donate.cancer.org/index. Contributions can also be made to Nalder Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.

So sorry for this loss. She was an inspiration to my daughter and helped her so much. My daughter lost her mom this summer as well, and was very saddened to hear that cancer had struck again. She was a role model to all of the people of this area and has touched many lives. Thank you for allowing her to help so many people over the years.

Cherise's children, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. I loved her. We were visiting teachers to each other and sang many times together, and she accompanied my sister and me many times while we sang. You know she was always full of joy and such a hard worker. I will miss her tremendously. I apologize for not attending the services as we will be at a family wedding in Washington state. My prayers are with you. Much Love, Ann and Chester Whiteside

Cherise was a passionate teacher and coach, and I enjoyed learning from her! Remember when she got so mad after the umpteenth bad call in an eighth grade girls' basketball game that she hit the wall yelling, "Farmer!" and got a technical? I hope you remember her with joy as I do and feel God's peace as you grieve her passing.

We are so saddened for your loss. Heaven is so lucky to have her! Cherise was such a fun inspiration to me and my family. I don't know what my mom would've done without her the past 2 years. She gave her such hope and light during a dark time. Cherise was such an inspiration to me and many other single parents. I had the pleasure of being in your moms first class. I loved her quirky way and teaching and her sense of humor. She also taught Hannah. Her way of teaching helped so many students. She just wasn't a teacher she was their friend. She cared wether they understood math. She also cared if they were having a bad day she would always put a smile on that students face . She was so loved and adored by all! She taught us all a valuable lesson in life. Love, hugs, and prayers to her children and family

My heart goes out to the family of Mrs. Alvey. She was such an inspiration to everyone around her. She never gave up and always, ALWAYS, had a smile on her face and it was contagious. She was one of the spunkiest and funnest teachers I have ever had. She made learning math fun and she always went out of her way to help her students, family, and friends. She will be greatly missed but she I am so glad she is no longer in pain. Love you Mrs. Alvey and my prayers are with your beautiful family.

To the children of Cherise: You are all so remarkably positive like your dear mother. It was a joy to meet or reconnect with each of you Friday night. I was the sign language interpreter in her 6th grade classroom. Cherise was not only a top-notch teacher, but a friend and mentor to students. She was an amazing friend as well. The faculty lounge rang with laughter because of her. Friendships made were true and deep. I see her spirit and positive attitude in each of you. I'm sure she will have joy in watching each of you step forward and progress in your life's journey. She is reflected in each of you. That's a great thing because she truly was the "Energizer bunny." Can't you just picture Cherise organizing activities and picking up the pace for all the angels? Heaven is a brighter place. She will continue to influence your life because of the rich heritage of love and family she gave you. Stay close with each other and know that she is always near and sharing in your important moments. Cherise, I will love and miss you until we meet again. Peace my Friend.

Cherise was a lovely, caring, committed, hard working woman. I met her when she trained to be a Driver Ed. teacher and she was one of my best students ever. I know she cared for her students and she loved her family. Any job worth doing was worth doing well!! I am sorry for your loss. However, we all know she is in a better place, peaceful and no longer in pain. Blessings to all of you during this difficult time.
