Larry Morrell Polson, 83, of Shelley, passed from this life to a better one, on March 1, 2010 at his home surrounded by family after a courageous fight with an aggressive cancer of the throat and esophagus.
Larry was born on July 21, 1926 in Jameston, Idaho to James Arthur and Lula Elenora Cox Polson. He attended school in Jameston, Idaho. While growing up his family moved to a ranch in Wolverine. He had many fond memories on the ranch.
Larry met Betty May Dial, who lived in the mountains close by on Cedar Creek. They were married in Pocatello, Idaho on January 5, 1945.
He was drafted and left for boot camp one month after getting married. Larry served in WWII in the United States Army, 19th Infantry for 2 years. He trained in boot camp at Camp Walters, Texas for eight weeks, was sent to Alabama for special training in self defense, and then to a camp in Washington. Larry was sent out on a ship to Japan. He spent one whole month on the ship waiting for everything to settle after the atomic bomb had been dropped. He was stationed in Nagasaki.
Larry was in the military police and the motor pool. He was honorable discharged, after serving close to two years, with three decorations, a Victory Medal, an Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and an Army of Occupation Medal.
After Larry returned home, he farmed and helped on the ranch in Wolverine. He later moved to Shelley where he made his home. He worked construction for Burgroff, Aslet, Pickett, Nelson and Fife. In the winter he trucked potatoes for Safeways. He graduated with high honors from a heavy equipment school in Weiser, Idaho. He worked 18 years for Bingham County Road and Bridge before retiring in 1992.
Larry and Betty raised five girls. His whole life was devoted to his family and helping them. He loved his children and grandchildren very much.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Shelley; daughters, Sherry (Bud) Christensen of Horseshoe Bend; Lori (Erin) Boye of Shelley; Becky (Don) Frongner of Idaho Falls; Candy (Clint) MacLeod of Pocatello; and Peggy Polson of Shelley, 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, a brother, Ron (Carlene) Polson, a sister, Zona (Jerry) Leatham, and a brother in law Bryce Millar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arthur Gerald Polson and Gail Polson, a sister, Donna Millar, and a great grandson, Kaleb Murphy.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday March 10, 2010 at Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 till 8:30 P.M. and Wednesday morning 9:30 till 10:40 A.M. at Nalder Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Taylor Cemetery with military rites by David B. Bleak Post 93.

Larry will be missed by all of us who had the good fortune to know him. He was one of the hardest working men I have ever known, active to his last ounce of strength. Larry was a very good man and we will always remember him for his kindness and generosity. Heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends, we count ourselves among them.

Please accept our condolences on the passing of Mr. Polson. My father, Agie Harada worked with Mr. Polson back in the 1970's. I attended Shelley schools and graduated with Peggy Polson in 1983. I now live in Spokane, WA and frequently visit the Shelley area. Rest assure that Mr. Poslon is now pain free in the whispering winds.
