Darrel Ray Peterson

March 10, 1930 — July 21, 2013

Darrel Ray Peterson passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday evening, the 21

st

of July, surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.  He was born March 10, 1930 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Arthur W. and Arzula Blatter Peterson.  His roots were in the farming community of New Sweden where he helped his father farm and where he developed his love for animals.  He owned and operated Darrel’s American for many years.  He finished his career as a spud buyer for GPOD.

He was active in civic events where he served as Spud Day Chairman, and sponsored and coached little league baseball for many years.  He was an avid Shelley sports fan and loved to support the community and youth in their activities.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served faithfully whenever called.  He was married on September 21, 1950 to Barbara Jean Christensen and later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Everyone knew him for his cheerful disposition and his loving kindness.  He was the most devoted of husbands and respected and revered by his children and grandchildren and was a true and sincere friend.

His is survived by his wife Barbara, his son Richard (Dixie) Peterson of Perry, UT, his daughters Susan (Louie) Morales of Firth, ID, Janet (Ray) Fillmore of South Jordan, UT; 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; his sister Marsha (Bill) Schmitt of Pocatello, ID, his brother Art (Sandi) Peterson of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 25 at Shelley Third & Fifth Ward Chapel (513 South Park Ave).  Family will visit with friends and relatives on Wednesday, July 24 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM at the Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley and 9:30 - 10:45 at the Church. Internment will be in the Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery.
