Donald S. Hoggan

August 31, 1930 — August 20, 2015

Donald Schofield Hoggan, 84, passed away at his home in Shelley, Idaho, on August 20th, with friends and loved ones at his side.

Don was born on August 31, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Dean Clarence Hoggan and Elsie Elizabeth Schofield Hoggan.  His childhood was filled with hunting trips, fishing excursions, and sports of any kind.  He graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City in 1949 where he was an all-star baseball player.

After high school, Don enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1949 until 1953.  During the Korean War, he served on an LSM-R rocket ship during numerous battles and engagements.

After his honorable discharge in 1953, Don enrolled in the University of Utah earning degrees in recreation management and physical education.

He married Joan Fenstermaker on April 17th, 1959 in Kaysville, Utah.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on March 4, 2000.  After marrying, the couple lived a short time in China Lake, California, before moving to Shelley, Idaho, in late 1959 to take a job with Sinclair Oil Company.  Don and Joan would remain in Shelley for the next 55 years where they raised their three children: Mark, Mike and Jamie.  During that time, Don worked for Sinclair, Boise Cascade and Pillsbury before retiring in 1991.  A few years later, Don would begin his favorite role of grandfather to Hannah, Maddie, Colter, Gracie, Eliza and Hailey.

Don loved being outside. It didn't matter if he was on a baseball diamond, in a fishing stream, on a mountain tracking deer, or in the garden, Don was always happy being in the great outdoors.  He was happiest when doing those things with his family.  Summer camping trips to Don's favorite fishing streams were always a family highlight.  Later in life, Don hung up the fishing pole to spend more time traveling to Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah to visit his grandchildren.

Don was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in numerous callings.  He especially enjoyed doing temple work and home teaching.  In addition to church service, Don was active in the community as a board member for the Senior Citizen's Center and various leadership positions with the Shelley American Legion.

Don was always ready to offer a smile and a joke to those around him.  He was a character in the truest and best sense; always smiling and never passing up an opportunity to joke, engage in friendly banter or good-natured teasing.  He truly loved being around other people.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; his children Mark, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Mike (Angie), of Bountiful, Utah, and Jamie (Carl) France, of Gill, Colorado; and his six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 25th, 2015 at the Shelley LDS 12th Ward,  325 East Locust Street, Shelley, Idaho. The family will visit with friends at Nalder Funeral Home at 110 West Oak Street, Shelley, Idaho, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, August 24th, and again from 9:30 am until 10:40 am prior to services at the church.  Burial will be at the Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery with military rites by the David B. Bleak Post #93 of Shelley.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to both Encompass Home Health and Hospice for the care provided Don, and to all the neighbors and friends who offered service and support.
