Evelyn Hill

October 18, 1936 — August 19, 2022

Evelyn Matheson Hill, 85, passed away peacefully in her home on August 19, 2022. She was born October 18, 1936 in Cedar City, Utah to Francis Webster Matheson and Bernice Armstrong. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She married her sweetheart Ralph Earl Hill in the Idaho Falls temple for time and all eternity on March 30, 1956. Oh, how the heavens must have rang out as they were, at last, reunited for all eternity. She was an amazing mother, beloved wife, wonderful sister and good friend to many.

She was survived by her children; Rosalee, Kathleen Bishop, Lorina (James) White, Kevin (Julie), Ivan (Micki Jo), Charlotte (William) Davidson, Elvina (Paul) Maynes, Daniel, Renee (Jim) Page, as well as 29 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Her siblings; Leland (Linda), Dorian (Maureen), Richard (Kathy), Kendall (Beverly), Diane (Steve) Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her Husband Ralph Earl Hill, Son Vaughn, Baby daughter Angel, Son-in-law David Bishop, and granddaughter Elizabeth Davidson.

She was loved by many. We will miss her sweet smile and wonderful laugh, but rejoice in knowing we will see her again.
Mom didn’t want a big funeral, just something short and simple. She just wanted to go home to heaven to be with her Husband Ralph and all those who ascended before her.

We could talk for hours about all the things she did and experiences she shared with us, but that is not what she wanted. So, here’s a brief synopsis.

She was the oldest of 6 children, born in Cedar city Utah to Francis Webster and Bernice Armstrong Matheson. She had the most children of all her siblings. She was a strong woman- she had to be to raise 10 children and with her husband passing on 40 years before her, she did a lot of that on her own.

Evelyn moved to Idaho when she was in her youth. She married her high school sweetheart in 1956. They had 11 children, one passing on at birth. She taught us the necessities of life and more – cooking, cleaning, sewing, gardening, how to be a good host. She taught us patience, how to be kind and loving. I never remember her using a harsh word or yelling at us if we were misbehaving.

She always showed she cared for us and others. We had the house where all the neighbor kids came to play, have dances, hosted formal dinners etc. She went above and beyond.

She taught us step by step and by example, with love, patience and kindness. She could pull things together in a moments notice, which happened often, but was a great planner also. She never gave up raising a huge garden that supported our whole family, even after dad died and most of us moved out.

Evelyn enjoyed going on our yearly family vacations, a lot of camping, hiking, museums, rock climbing and exploring unknown places. She kept journals and clippings of places we’d gone to and taught us to do the same. Gardening was important and she kept journals of that too with the daily weather included.

The church was very important to her. Again, she led by example, always making sure we said the blessing at meal times, paying tithing and fast offerings, accepting callings, regularly attending church, as long as she was able, and encouraging us to do so as well.

Evelyn had many different medical issues that affected her quality of life for the last several years, but being the person she is, she always surprised the doctors and beat several odds. She put her best face forward and just did what had to be done, surprising everyone to the bitter end.

We will miss her dearly, but are happy to know she is finally free from the struggles and pains of this earthly life. We know she is smiling in heaven after being reunited with family and friends.

May we always remember her and her example and do our best to share that same kindness and love with all those around us.
