Heber Janus Hansen Jr.

March 16, 1931 — September 18, 2009

Heber J. Hansen, Jr., 78, of Shelley, passed away peacefully at home September 17, 2009. Heber was born March 16, 1931 in Pocatello to Heber J. Hansen and Amy Porter Hansen. He was raised and attended school in Pocatello, graduating from Pocatello High School in 1949.  Heber married his high-school sweetheart, Dorothy Jean Adams, on March 25, 1949 in Pocatello and was sealed in the Idaho Falls temple in 1952. They were blessed with two children, Larry and Amy, while living in Pocatello.

Heber and Dorothy moved their family to southern California in 1953, where Sandy and Adam joined the family.  Heber attended college there, worked as an accountant for several years and later became a partner in a construction company.  They moved their family to Richmond, Utah in 1971, where Heber became a partner in a radio station and started a construction company with his son Larry in the Cache Valley area.  In 1976, they moved the business and the family to Shelley.

During his 33 years in Shelley, Heber served the community in various positions, including as Bingham County Assessor and Mayor of Shelley.

Heber was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many different callings, including Scoutmaster, Bishop, High Councilman and Stake President.  Heber and Dorothy served for a year and a half as missionaries in the Addiction Recovery program.

Heber had a great sense of humor and enjoyed camping, fishing, loved music, being with his family and was known to say “I never had a bad day.”

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, children Larry and Susan Hansen, Amy and Greg Gemar of Shelley, Sandy and Chris McKnight of Cornish, Utah, and Adam and Norine Hansen of Great Meadows, New Jersey; sisters Elsa Halling of Brigham City, Utah and Jeanette Buckley (Ralph) of Pocatello; many nieces and nephews; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Kiersten Gemar and Joshua Hansen, and two brothers, Orval and Mark Hansen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, Sept 26, 2009 at the Shelley Stake Center, 325 E. Locust.  The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30pm Friday the 25

th

at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W. Oak St. in Shelley, and from 9:30 to 10:40am Saturday the 26

th

at the church.  Burial will be in the Basalt Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Heber’s memory to The Perpetual Education Fund of the LDS Church or Hands of Hope Hospice of Idaho Falls.
