Tribute

David Erin Butler, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, musician, and librarian, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024. He was 86 years old.

Born in Idaho Falls on November 5, 1937, to Grant and Edith (Peck) Butler, David grew up in Shelley, surrounded by the love of his family and the close-knit community. He nurtured a lifelong love of music, starting with clarinet and soon finding his true voice on the trumpet in the 4th grade.

After graduating from Shelley High School and Ricks College, David took a three-year teaching position at Liahona High School in the Tongan Islands, sharing his knowledge and music with the local community. Back in the United States, he earned a degree from BYU, and found the love of his life, Kerry Jepsen, whom he married in 1961.

After the birth of their first child, Denae, they returned to the Tongan Islands for a second three-year stint of teaching. Son, Kevin, was born in the islands, and four more children (Kenley, Darin, Kara, Darci) followed upon their return to the United States.

David went on to earn Master's Degrees from BYU and Indiana University. He taught music in Idaho public schools before becoming a librarian at Farmington High School in New Mexico and Ricks College in Idaho. His dedication to knowledge and service was evident not only in his professional life but also in his active involvement in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in numerous leadership positions, including Bishop and High Councilor, leaving a lasting impact on his community. Over the years, friends, neighbors and family have recalled David performing many quiet acts of selfless service he was always doing for others.

In retirement, David and Kerry served a Church mission in Nauvoo, IL, where they performed daily as actors, singers and musicians for visitors.

Beyond his professional endeavors, David was a devoted family man. He cherished spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling the world, playing tennis, making music with friends and family, but he was happiest sharing quiet moments with his beloved Kerry.

David will be remembered for his kind heart, gentle spirit, dedication to education, and unwavering faith. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and music that will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Kerry, their six children, and numerous grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life for David will be held on Sunday, March 17th at 2:00 pm at Foxtail Senior Living, 3559 W Bavaria Street, Eagle, Idaho. A short graveside service will be held on Monday, March 18th at 11:30 am at Hillcrest Cemetery in David’s hometown of Shelley, Idaho.

David requested that in lieu of flowers, you take your family out to dinner.
