David Elwin Clayson

July 1, 1948 — March 8, 2026

David Elwin Clayson passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Dave was a giant packaged in a miniature-sized body who loved the Lord, his family, and people in general.

David was born on July 1, 1948, in Shelley, Idaho, to Elwin (“Whitey”) and Darlene Duce Clayson. He grew up in eastern Idaho and graduated from Firth High School. After graduation, he attended one year at Ricks College before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes Mission. He continued his education at Brigham Young University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He later received his Master of Education from Idaho State University and completed his School Psychologist certificate there as well.

David worked as a school psychologist for three years before returning to the life he loved most—farming. He spent the remainder of his life working the land, a vocation that reflected his deep roots in the community and his strong work ethic.

He was dedicated to public service and education, serving as a member of the Firth School Board for 17 years. Dave also devoted much of his life to service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Throughout the years he served in many capacities, including Bishop, Stake President, temple ordinance worker, and temple sealer. His faith and testimony shaped every aspect of his life, and he quietly influenced countless people through his kindness, leadership, and example.

David loved his family deeply and found great joy in time spent with them. His life was marked by humility, faith, hard work, and genuine love for others.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Eris Clayson; his six children, Trishann (Jared) Russell, Brent (Maddie) Clayson, Daniel (Jill) Clayson, Cammie (Scott) Sauer, Candie (Brandan) Madsen, and Nathan (Brooke) Clayson; his seven siblings, Nolan, Dennis, Gaylen, Melanie, Janeen, Connie, and Kaylene; 27 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elwin and Darlene Clayson; his infant sister; and four grandchildren.

Dave’s life was a legacy of faith, service, and love that will continue to bless his family and all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2026 at the Firth Ward Chapel, 744 North 600 East. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 till 7:30 p.m. at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W Oak Street in Shelley and Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. till 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Firth Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the Gables of Shelly and Oakstone Hospice for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to local missionaries or the ward mission fund.
