Derryll Trent Hillman

May 17, 1940 — December 5, 2017

Derryll Trent Hillman, 76, of Firth passed away December 5, 2017 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Derryll Trent Hillman was born to Viola Campbell and Lyle Irvin Hillman on 17 May 1941 at Eaton’s Maternity Home in Shelley, Idaho. His childhood and youth were spent in the Shelley/Firth area. He graduated from Firth High School in 1959. This is where he met his future wife, Norma Kay Freeman.

After serving for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes Mission, he returned home and attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. His marriage to Norma was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on 8 March 1963. He received his Associates degree from Ricks College in 1964.

Family is Derryll and Norma’s greatest joy, being the parents and grandparents of five children, fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Derryll pursued work in the insurance industry, and the construction industry, doing custom woodwork, and working in sales of Home Improvement products.

Derryll was a life-long active member of the LDS church, holding many leadership and teaching callings. He served in Bishoprics, the Young Men’s program and for many years as Gospel Doctrine Sunday School teacher. In 2010 he and Norma served a full-time mission in the Idaho Falls Temple Visitor’s Center.

Several interests and hobbies filled Derryll’s time, and he spent many years doing woodwork, building custom cabinets, desks and other pieces of beautiful furniture for clients and customers all along the Snake River Valley. Music played a very large part in Derryll’s life. He studied the violin and played the piano by ear. He also participated most recently in a guitar group. He loved singing and making music with his children and family. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed researching family history. He was especially fond of ice cream.

Derryll and Norma have had opportunity to travel to many places throughout the United States, visiting their children and grandchildren in the South, Southwest and Midwest states.

Derryll was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Irvin Hillman, his mother, Viola Campbell Hillman, his baby sister, Kerrie Hillman and a younger brother, Danny Hillman.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Norma Freeman Hillman, four daughters; Annette (Tad) Taylor, Cheryl (Blair) Esplin, Jennifer (Charles) Stanford and Tamara (Benjamin) Russell and a son, Alan Trent (Sarah) Hillman. He has eight granddaughters, seven grandsons and three great-granddaughters.

He is also survived by four of his five brothers; Verdell (Loma) Hillman, Darwin (Sheila) Hillman, Blaine (Janice) Hillman and Laroy (Margaret) Hillman, and three of his four sisters; Janice (Stephen) Simmons, Kathleen (David) Leary and Lanae (Jerry) Hokanson, and a sister in-law, Linda Hillman, wife of Danny.
