Lynette Shumway Draper

August 26, 1952 — August 10, 2023

Lynette Shumway Draper, age 70, passed away suddenly at home on August 10, 2023.

Lynette was born on August 26, 1952 to Dean and Evelyn Shumway in Idaho Falls, ID. Her two older brothers, Laron and Scott, were excited for a baby sister. A few years later her sister Sherry completed their family.

She grew up on a potato and dairy farm, learning to work hard alongside her family. She was always more comfortable outside than in the kitchen and preferred wearing pants instead of a dress. Lynette usually had a baseball and mitt in her hands. She attended Shelley schools, always enjoying recess.

During high school, she played volleyball and basketball, but her favorite was playing softball.  She also played clarinet in the band. After graduating from Shelley High School in 1970, Lynette attended Ricks College, where she earned her associate degree while continuing to cultivate her love of sports. She then moved to Provo to attend BYU, where her love for the Cougars began. She was true blue, through and through.

In the fall of 1973, while refereeing a powder puff football game, Lynette started talking to a handsome young man named Roger Draper. She mentioned she was thirsty so Roger, always chivalrous, bought her a drink. This was the start of their two year courtship. Lynette graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in August of 1975. A few days later on August 20th, Roger and Lynette were married in the Idaho Falls LDS temple for time and all eternity.

They started their family with Patrick, then settled near Lynette’s family in Woodville. Their family continued to grow as they welcomed Cari Lyn, Marinda, Daniel, and Donald.

Coaching softball teams, camping trips to Birch Creek, ball games at Shumway Park, and playing card games while eating ice cream with Grandpa and Grandma Shumway filled their summers with joy. Lynette and her family were a tremendous support to her parents as they got older in life.

Lynette drove school bus for nearly 25 years. To many, she was known as “Mrs. Tweety” because of the picture of Tweety placed in the window to help the kindergarteners know which bus to ride.

She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Being sports athletic director, serving as Primary president, and planning young women’s camp were some of her favorite callings.

Lynette’s family held a special place in her heart. She looked forward to summer family reunions with all 5 children, their spouses, and 15 grandchildren. These memories will be treasured for years to come.

As her health began to limit her physical abilities, Roger has tenderly and lovingly cared for her needs. She looked forward to Snapchats, phone calls and Marco Polos from their children and grandchildren.

She will be remembered for her genuine care and interest in others, her positive and happy attitude, being the Tweety bus driver, her signature banana bread cupcakes with bright yellow frosting and mini M&M’s for the grandkids.

Lynette is survived by her husband Roger Draper, son Patrick & Lanette Draper of Saratoga Springs, UT, daughter Cari Lyn & Michael Bak of Plano, Texas, daughter Marinda Draper of Idaho Falls, ID, son Daniel Draper of Jackson, WY, and son Donald & Sydney Draper of Shelley, ID. Her siblings, brother Laron & LouAnn Shumway of Idaho Falls, ID, brother Scott & Sue Shumway of Star Valley, WY, and sister Sherry & Dave Russell of Bluffdale, UT. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Spencer, Abigail, James, Brigham, Jenavieve, Sophia, Joseph, Vivian, Amelia, Lori, Brooklyn, Lexi, Luke, Walker, and Wyatt.

Lynette was preceded in death by her parents Dean & Evelyn Shumway and grandson Gordon Draper.
