Sharon Metcalf Hjelm was born 18 February 1932 in Idaho Falls Idaho. Her parents were Carl Russell and Agnes Smith Metcalf. She had four older brothers – Farrel, Verle, Keith and Darwin, and two younger sisters Valeen and Valerie, all deceased.
She had several friends in school – Shirley, Barbara, and Jeanine. Sharon attended schools in Idaho Falls and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1950. She had taken secretarial training in school. She worked at the LDS hospital cafeteria during her junior and senior years of high school and before she was married. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had been in choirs, served as a YW teacher and with humanitarian efforts.
She married Gerald Paul Hjelm 21 March 1952 in Idaho Falls. They have three children –Gregory Paul (Rita) Hjelm, Cindy Valeen (Bruce) Huffaker, and Kevin Drew Hjelm . They lived first in Riverview, then in Firth. They also farmed in the Kimball area and later bought a farm in Pingree on Liberty Road and moved there from 1976 to 2002. Sharon was the district secretary and bookkeeper for Firth School District, mostly from 1960s to the 1990s. They retired and moved to Blackfoot. Jerry passed away in 2018. She moved to The Gables in 2026.
She and Jerry have eleven grandchildren – Greg, Chris, Cody, DJ (deceased), Casey, Keve, Paul, Matt, Joanna, Jim and Robyn, ten great grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She loved her family. She loved to read, garden, sew and did a lot of counted cross-stitch work. We will miss her so much.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 30, 2025 at Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley. The family will receive friends Thursday morning from 10:00 till 10:45 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the Gables of Blackfoot and Symbii hospice for their loving care of Mom, we so appreciate all you did for her.
