Timothy Michael Grebstad, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on November 19, 2025. He died in the arms of his beloved wife, Kathy at his home in Basalt, Idaho. He fought a hard and courageous battle, but in the end, it was Alzheimer’s that finally took his life.
Tim was born on April 22, 1949, in Lynwood, California. He was the son of Ernest Henry Grebstad and Effie Jayne Sweeney — the eldest of the 2 siblings. His younger sister, Denise, was only 13 months younger than him. He was raised in the Los Angeles suburb of El Serino, California, where he developed his lifelong love of Astronomy, hard work, storytelling, wood working and people. However; he took the most pride and received the most joy from his children and grandchildren.
Tim graduated from Wilson High School in 1967 and went on to attended Junior College. However; in late 1967, he passed a Civil Servant’s test and was hired by the Los Angeles Postal Service until early 1968, when Tim enrolled in the US Air Force in Los Angeles, California. He served from 1968 to 1972; eventually, reaching the rank of Sergeant E-4. Tim faithfully served his country for four years active duty and two years in the Air Force reserves. He was stationed at both Howard Air Base, in Panama, and at Mtn. Home Air Base in Idaho. It was an experience that strengthened his love of Country. And he enjoyed going with the grandkids to the various Veteran’s Day programs over the years. He was proud that his name was on the military monument, erected at the Shelley Post Office along with his father-in-law, Arthur C. Hansen who served during World War II.
Tim served on the landing fields at both Howard and Mtn. Home Air Bases. While there he was exposed to toxin’s that in the future were deemed to be the cause, fifty years later, that he developed this dreaded disease of Dementia/Alzheimer’s. A disease that, in the end, took everything from him and left him a shell of his former self. However, we are grateful to the Veterans Administration which has brought us much help and support during the time he fought this final battle, and we thank them for that.
On August 12, 1970, Tim married the love of his life, Kathy Hansen, at her parent’s home in Basalt. It was a love at first sight story, having only met 12 days earlier in Mtn. Home, Idaho. It wasn’t hard to love and trust Tim, his new in-laws loved him immediately, just as their daughter had done. Together, they built a family centered on love, learning, teasing, and fun, Tim put 100% of himself into everything he did. They were married for over 55 years.
Tim and Kathy were blessed with, and he is survived by, his three children: Robin Michelle (Miguel) Madrigal, Michael Laine (Jennifer) Grebstad, and Christian Arthur (Sandy) Grebstad. He is also survived by Wendy (Kevin) Ellis. He is also survived by 10 wonderful grandchildren who he thoroughly loved and enjoyed. “The more the merrier” was his motto. He loved each one and would do anything for them. Those 10 loved grandchildren are Hannah Grebstad (Gavin) Spinler, Destiny Grebstad (Shawn Taylor), Emme Grebstad, Gavin Grebstad, Sophie Madrigal, Paityn Grebstad, Christiana Grebstad, Sebastian Rodriguez, Paxton Grebstad, and Vyolet Grebstad. He was expecting his first Great-Grandchild (Damien) in February of next year. I’m sure he is showing him the Grebstad ways and loving him as long as he can while he’s there in Heavan with him.
Tim worked as a mail handler for the Post Office for one year before entering into the Air Force in 1968. Taking a leave of absence when he entered the service, he was again able to return to work at the post office in 1972 when he was discharged. Tim worked at the Hollywood, California Post Office for several years until he was transferred to the Blackfoot, Idaho Post Office in 1977. He retired in 2007.
Tim loved people and always treated everyone with respect and kindness. He earned the respect and friendship of countless people along the way. Three of which were friends that he had since childhood in El Sereno, California. They are John Boyko, who he was friends with for over 70 years and Ernie Govia. His third life-long friend has been Donna Siebig who has been a family friend over 60 years. He also had two work buddies from his time at the Blackfoot Post Office. Those two friends were Kenny Buck and Wayne Taylor. They were known as the three Amigo’s. they always had each other’s backs and stayed friends for over 39 years. Tim was known for remembering every person he met—their names, their stories, and their families. His warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.
Tim’s legacy lives on in his wife, Kathy; their three children; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild (due in February), and of course Wendy Ellis. Tim loved each and every one so much. His family and friends will remember his stories, laughter, teasing, and love.
We as a family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Symbii Home Health and Hospice. Tim’s nurse and friend Chris Evans. His caregivers Linda, Tawna, and granddaughters Emme and Hannah; as well as too many others to name. We’d also like to thank Veterans Administration and our doctor Brady Cook. In addition, we would also like to thank our family DiAnn (OB) Burnside and Linda Hansen for their love and support. They have all been such a help throughout these long days and longer nights while Tim fought his battle with this terrible disease.
